Design Technology

Design and technology education begins well before children begin their formal schooling. Children constantly explore their world through a variety of activities and it is vital for us to continue to extend this. Design and technology is an inspiring, rigorous and practical subject. Using creativity and imagination, pupils design and make products that solve real and relevant problems within a variety of contexts, considering their own and others’ needs, wants and values.

At The Free School Norwich, children acquire a broad range of subject knowledge and draw on disciplines such as mathematics, science, engineering, computing and art. Children learn how to take risks, becoming resourceful, innovative, enterprising and capable citizens. Through the evaluation of past and present design and technology, they develop a critical understanding of its impact on daily life and the wider world. High-quality design and technology education makes an essential contribution to the creativity, culture, wealth and well-being of the nation.

Intent

Children will:

  • develop the creative, technical and practical expertise needed to perform everyday tasks confidently and to participate successfully in an increasingly technological world.
  • build and apply a repertoire of knowledge, understanding and skills to design and make high quality prototypes and products for a wide range of users.
  • critique, evaluate and test their ideas and products and the work of others.
  • be able to select appropriate tools and investigate different techniques for making a product, whilst following safe procedures.
  • begin to understand about the characteristics of different materials and the use of simple mechanisms.
  • understand and apply the principles of nutrition and learn how to cook.
  • acquire and develop designing and making skills; working with confidence in a stimulating, educational environment.

Implementation

At The Free School Norwich, we strive to provide a program of learning opportunities for all pupils to gain the basic knowledge and understanding, which underpin design and technology. In addition, we endeavour to provide continuity and progression for all pupils throughout the curriculum as they move through the school. We aim to ensure health and safety of all pupils during design and technology activities.

Impact

Children are encouraged to reflect upon their work as individuals, in class groups and across the school. The children are provided with opportunities to share their work with peers and celebrate successes. We place a big focus on the evaluation stage of the Design process so children can reflect upon their successes and consider improvements for next time.

Outcomes in Design Technology folders, along with final products or outcomes, demonstrate the journey that children have taken through their DT lessons and demonstrate skills and knowledge acquired and refined throughout time taken in this subject. As children progress through the school, skills and knowledge are built upon and children explore a wide range of techniques and design materials to further enhance their talents.
